Gullit & Van Basten – AC Milan 88/89 Home Retro Shirt
The Birth of a Dynasty
The AC Milan 1988/89 home jersey is one of the most storied shirts in European football. Red and black vertical stripes, the Mediolanum sponsor across the chest, and the iconic Adidas three stripes on the sleeves — this is the kit worn when Arrigo Sacchi's Milan machine conquered Europe for the first time in two decades.

The Players: Gullit, Van Basten & Rijkaard
Ruud Gullit — born 1 September 1962 in Amsterdam — was the complete footballer: powerful, elegant, and devastating in the air. The 1987 Ballon d'Or winner arrived at Milan in 1987 and immediately transformed the club. His dreadlocks and dazzling skill made him one of the most recognisable athletes on the planet.
Marco van Basten — born 31 October 1964 in Utrecht — was arguably the most technically gifted centre-forward in history. His ability to score from any angle, with either foot or his head, was unmatched. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1988, 1989, and 1992.
Frank Rijkaard — born 30 September 1962 in Amsterdam — was the engine of the midfield: composed, intelligent, and relentless. Together, the Dutch trio formed the spine of one of the greatest club sides ever assembled.

The Season: Serie A & European Cup 1988/89
Under manager Arrigo Sacchi, Milan played a revolutionary high-pressing, zonal-marking system that was years ahead of its time. In Serie A, they finished runners-up to Inter, but in Europe they were untouchable. The 1988/89 European Cup campaign remains one of the most dominant in the history of the competition.
The Game: European Cup Final – 24 May 1989, Camp Nou, Barcelona
The final was played at the Camp Nou in Barcelona against Steaua Bucharest, the reigning champions of Romania. Before a crowd of 97,000, Milan delivered a masterclass. Gullit opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a powerful header from a Carlo Ancelotti cross. Van Basten doubled the lead in the 38th minute with a clinical finish after a sweeping team move.
In the second half, Van Basten added a third and Gullit completed the scoring to make it 4–0. It was a demolition. Steaua, who had beaten Barcelona in the 1986 final, were overwhelmed by Milan's intensity and tactical precision. Gullit and Van Basten each scored twice — a final for the ages.
It was AC Milan's third European Cup and their first since 1969. Sacchi's revolution had delivered the ultimate prize.

The Kit: Adidas Perfection in Red and Black
The 1988/89 AC Milan home jersey was produced by Adidas and sponsored by Mediolanum, the financial services company co-founded by Silvio Berlusconi. The shirt features the classic rossoneri red and black vertical stripes, a simple round collar, and the Adidas trefoil logo — a design that has aged beautifully and remains one of the most sought-after retro shirts in the world.
