Maradona – Argentina 1986 World Cup Retro Shirt
The Shirt That Defined a Generation
Few football shirts carry the weight of history like the Argentina 1986 World Cup home jersey. Light blue and white vertical stripes, the AFA crest, and the number 10 on the back — this is the shirt Diego Armando Maradona wore when he single-handedly carried a nation to glory in Mexico.

The Player: Diego Armando Maradona
Born on 30 October 1960 in Lanús, Buenos Aires, Diego Maradona is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time. Explosive, technically flawless, and possessed of an almost supernatural ability to change a game in an instant, Maradona was at the absolute peak of his powers in the summer of 1986. Playing for Napoli at club level, he arrived in Mexico as the most feared player on the planet — and he delivered beyond all expectation.
The Tournament: Mexico 1986
The 1986 FIFA World Cup was held in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June. Argentina entered as strong contenders, but no one could have predicted the individual brilliance that was about to unfold. Maradona played every minute of every match, finishing the tournament with 5 goals and 5 assists — numbers that don't even begin to capture his dominance.

The Game: Argentina vs England – Quarter-Final, 22 June 1986
The most iconic match in World Cup history. Played at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City before 114,580 spectators, this quarter-final between Argentina and England was charged with political tension — just four years after the Falklands War. In the space of four minutes in the second half, Maradona produced two of the most talked-about goals ever scored.
The first — the infamous "Hand of God" — saw Maradona punch the ball into the net with his left hand, a moment he later described as "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God." The referee, Ali Bin Nasser of Tunisia, allowed it to stand.
Four minutes later came the Goal of the Century. Maradona received the ball in his own half, turned, and proceeded to dribble past Peter Reid, Kenny Sansom, Terry Butcher, Terry Fenwick, and goalkeeper Peter Shilton before slotting into an empty net. The 60-metre run took just 10.8 seconds. It was voted the Goal of the Century by FIFA in 2002.
Argentina won 2–1. Maradona scored both goals.

The Final: Argentina vs West Germany – 29 June 1986
Argentina faced West Germany in the final at the Azteca. Jorge Valdano and José Luis Brown also scored as Argentina won 3–2, with Maradona providing the decisive assist for Jorge Burruchaga's winner in the 83rd minute. Argentina were world champions for the second time.
